Jared Leto will star in Tron: Ares

Disney has been given the go-ahead to continue work on Tron: Ares, the third film in the Tron series after 2010’s Tron: Legacy, with Jared Leto in the title role. Furthermore, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell no Tales director Joaquim Rönning is in early talks to direct.

According to a report from DeadlineThe team behind Tron: Ares is currently planning to begin production in August 2023 in Vancouver, and the film’s cast is currently being assembled. No deals have been completed yet, but this will be Ronning’s fourth time collaborating with Disney. Most recently, the director finished shooting Disney+’s Young Woman and the Sea starring Daisy Ridley.

Tron: Ares will be written by Jesse Wigoto and will serve as a sequel to Tron: Legacy, which was directed by Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski. Sean Bailey and Sam Dickerman will serve as executive producers, and Justin Springo, Jared Leto, Jeffrey Silver, and Leto’s Paradox partner Emma Ludbrook will serve as producers.

This third Tron movie had been in the works for some time, before it was canceled in 2015. Disney was also said to be interested in Leto at the time.

Leto himself recently played Dr. Michael Morbius in Morbius and Adam Newman in WeCrashed. He is currently working on Haunted Mansion for Disney.
