My crime by François Ozon will be released in cinemas on March 8, 2023. The adaptation of Georges Berr’s play brings together two future icons of French cinema: Nadia Tereszkiewicz and Rebecca Marder. Bulles de culture’s review and opinion on the film.

Summary:

In the 1930s in Paris, Madeleine Verdier, a young and pretty penniless and talentless actress, is accused of the murder of a famous producer. Helped by her best friend Pauline, a young unemployed lawyer, she is acquitted for self-defense. Then begins a new life, made of glory and success, until the truth comes to light…

My crime : the director’s passion for the movie stories

Another theatrical adaptation Francois Ozon with My crimeinitially a piece of George Berr And Louis Verneuilwhich succeeds, a little less than a year apart, the Fassbinderian melody peter von kant. The connection between these two bombastic adaptations is in their common theme, having to do with the director’s passion for “cinema stories”.

In an exuberant atmosphere, this action vaudeville set in the 1930s focuses, as often in the director’s filmography, on composing splendid female portraits. Two young women, one an actress, the other a future lawyer, are determined not to let themselves be taken in by the “stronger sex”.

Like Roxy Hart and Velma Kelly in the musical Chicago, the protagonists of My crime use the court system as a stage to increase their popularity. This quest for success obviously resonates with today’s issues, when the excesses of social networks seem to be the path to recognition.

Two stunning actresses

Ozon manufactures a luminous case for Nadia Tereszkiewicz (The Almond Trees) And Rebecca Marder (Simone, the journey of the century), two dazzling actresses, promised to a mapped out future. They face a particularly extensive cast, including a Dany Boon endearing and an Isabelle Huppert full of self-mockery. The baroness of French cinema portrays an old actress on the decline who seeks to reconnect as much with success as with her youth.

The story assumes the clichés in a completely incredible retro universe; as for the staging, it composes a wonderfully kitsch reconstruction where sets and costumes recall the visual codes of the musical

Our opinion ?

Echoing the #MeToo movement, My crime is a subtle mix between Vase And peter von kantdriven in particular by Nadia Tereszkiewicz And Rebecca Marder. Francois Ozon speaks brilliantly about his two favorite subjects: cinema and women.
