Despite an illustrious career that spans decades, actor Gary Oldman is best known for the Harry Potter franchise.

The British artist began acting in 1979 and is acclaimed for his work on stage as well as on screen. Even as one of the highest-grossing performers of all time, Oldman still credits the Harry Potter films for expanding his fan base.

Oldman appeared in four of Potter’s beloved godfather Sirius Black’s eight films. Portraying the fan-favorite character changed things for him.

Speaking during the Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: ​​Return to Hogwartsoldman said:

“The great thing about the ‘Potter’ experience is that a lot of kids couldn’t see the type of movies I was doing. And then my fanbase changed.”

The considerable and impressive work of Gary Oldman preceding Harry Potter was definitely not kid friendly. Oldman’s desired stories are heavier and more complex, so the fan base is also much older.
