Disney is backing Will Smith as he’s set to return as Genie in Aladdin sequel

Will Smith landed his first role as he’s set to return as the Genie in the superhit sequel Aladdin since the Oscars slapgate that made headlines.

Disney is said to stand by the Emancipation star, who “did a lot of work on himself” after slapping Chris Rock onstage at the 2022 Oscars.

Smith hopes to begin filming the film, loosely based on the Thousand and one Night series of Middle Eastern folk tales by the end of this year.

An insider said The sun“It would be one of the first movies Will has done since the Oscars slap and that’s pretty surprising considering it’s going to be for a kids movie.”

“He’s done a lot of work on himself and the consensus is that all of that will be a thing of the past by the time the movie comes out.

“The first movie was a huge hit, so it would be silly not to make another one, and it would be such a shame to have to re-cast Will on what happened,” the source added.

“So Disney is keen to support it and bring it back into the fold,” the insider explained.

It is not yet confirmed whether or not the film’s protagonists, Mena Massoud as Aladdin and Naomi Scott as Jasmine, will return for the film.

However, in an interview Massoud was asked if he knew what was going on with the film, he said, “There’s been a change with the writers, and they’re working on a new draft.”

“If Aladdin 2 happens, that’s fantastic. It should happen,” he added. “It’s not going to be based on the animated version. It’s going to be a new original story.
